Mit seiner Figur des Adam erkundete Rudolf Hausner, Mitbegründer des Wiener Phantastischen Realismus, die Tiefen der Existenz in seinem eigenen Spiegelbild. Kunsthistoriker interpretierten die surrealen Selbstporträts als Fortsetzung der Lehren Sigmund Freuds mit den Mitteln der Malerei. Heute wäre Hausner 100 Jahre alt geworden.

Die Staffelei, eine Leinwand und gleich daneben ein Spiegel: Rudolf Hausner, geboren am 4. Dezember 1914 in Wien, brauchte kein Modell und keine Vorlage - er war sich selbst Anlass genug für seine Gemälde. Das neugierig nach vorn gereckte Gesicht, die perspektivisch vergrößerte Nase, der fragende, skeptische Ausdruck in den Augen: Das war Adam - der erste Mensch, der Suchende, der Mensch schlechthin. Und in einem genial einfachen Doppelschritt der formalen Logik leitete der Künstler her: Wenn Adam für alle Menschen steht, und wenn Rudolf Hausner ein Mensch ist - dann ist dieser Rudolf Hausner Adam. Und dann malt er immer wieder sich selbst. Adam im Labyrinth, Adam im Matrosenanzug, Adam mit einem zur Mütze gefalteten Papierschiffchen auf dem Kopf.

"Also ich meine, bei aller Liebe zum Beispiel zu Frau, Kindern und Familie und Freundschaften, nicht? Das macht man manchmal mir zum Vorwurf: Er malt immer den Adam, nicht? Der malt immer nur sich selber. Ich frag mich: Wer hat schon, welcher Künstler hat schon je einen anderen gemalt als sich selbst? Ich möchte sagen: Die Äpfel von Cezanne sind ja auch lauter Selbstporträts."

Van Gogh und Cezanne waren die Helden seiner Zeit an der Wiener Akademie. Ebenso die deutschen Expressionisten Kirchner, Pechstein, Nolde - damals in ihrer Wildheit durchaus umstrittene Künstler. Es kamen die Nazis, es kam der sogenannte Anschluss Österreichs ans Dritte Reich; Hausner war 24 und wurde mit Ausstellungsverbot belegt. Schwere Zeiten - in denen der junge Maler immerhin seine Technik perfektionieren und sein Wissen um die Kunstgeschichte tief, sehr tief verwurzeln konnte.

Vordringen in die Innenwelten der Psyche

Seinen eigenen Ort in dieser Kunstgeschichte entdeckte und eroberte Rudolf Hausner nach dem Krieg, als wieder einmal alles in eine Richtung stürmte. Und wenn er sich später in seinem Atelier sitzend daran erinnert und dabei "wir" sagt, dann meint er vor allem Zeitgenossen wie Ernst Fuchs, Arik Brauer oder Wolfgang Hutter, mit denen er die "Wiener Schule des Phantastischen Realismus" begründete - eine Gruppe von Künstlern, die um so entschiedener in die Innenwelten der Psyche vorzudringen suchten, je dogmatischer der Zeitgeist allein die Oberfläche zum Terrain der Künste erklärte.

"Es hat jeder für sich etwas entdeckt. Und wir waren umgeben von einer feindlichen Kunst, das war die abstrakte Malerei. Die abstrakte Malerei war Marshallplan-orientiert, nach Amerika ausgerichtet und wollte nur ja nicht erinnern an die Nazikunst oder an die Kommunistenkunst hinterm Eisernen Vorhang; daher war Gegenständliches ganz verpönt. Aber wir vier Dummköpfe haben uns von dem Marshallplan goar net imponieren lassen."

Die Gegnerschaft war fundamental. Eine Kunst, die das Erinnern durch Ausweichen zu vermeiden suchte, widersprach Hausners Haltung nicht nur taktisch; der Marshallplan zur Abstraktion verletzte nicht nur sein Gefühl für europäische Kultur von Laokoon über Leonardo da Vinci bis zur klassischen Moderne: Hausners Thema war die Psychoanalyse - ganz sachlich: die Analyse psychischer Prozesse und Verwerfungen, aber auch im Sinn eines kulturhistorischen Erbes: Hausner sah sich - und wurde gefeiert - als Maler, der die Studien eines Sigmund Freud mit den Mitteln der Kunst fortführte.

"Das dürfen Sie ohne Weiteres so sehen, weil - es hat sich mittlerweile herausgestellt, auch im Gespräch mit Fachleuten, dass die Methode, die ich anwende, also wenn ich mich vor einen Spiegel stelle und in mein Gesicht schau' und daneben die Staffelei habe, so ist das ein Arrangement, wie wenn ich einen Diwan stehen hätte und mich auf den hinleg' und nun anfange zu reden, was aus mir herausreden will."

Das Publikum applaudierte. Ein Maler, der sich als Stellvertreter erbot, eigene wie kollektive Träume, Ängste, Fantasien - auch sexuelle Fantasien - auszuloten, der die geheimnisvollen Architekturen der Innenwelt in altmeisterlicher Lasurtechnik zum Leuchten brachte: Dieser Maler wurde ein Star. Seine Gemälde erzielen noch heute Höchstpreise, seine Motive zierten Schallplatten-Cover und Zeitschriften, seine Druckgrafik gehört zur kulturellen Grundausstattung einer Generation.

Rudolf Hausner starb am 25. Februar 1995. Sein Adam ist das vertraute Gesicht zur immer wieder neu gestellten Frage: Wer bin ich?

Das Museum Würth in Künzelsau ehrt Rudolf Hausner mit einer großen Retrospektive zum 100. Geburtstag. Sie ist dort zu sehen bis zum 7. Juni 2015.

This is very sad - another Icon of the Fantastic Realists is gone. This would have gone largely unnoticed (what a shame, actually) were it not for Sigrid Nepelius posting in her German language webzine Phantastisch. A quick websearch reveals that there is nothing at all, other than this article on Phantastisch. The papers didn't notice, and neither the english nor the german wikipedia articles had been updated.

The Phantasten Community mourns one of its greats. The Viennese painter and graphic artist Wolfgang Hutter (13 December 1928) passed away on September 26, 2014. Hutter was a founding member of the Art Club and one of the main representatives of the famous Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. His magical canvasses are worked out to the smallest detail and reveal his sensitive handwriting. Hutter's art encompasses also tapestries and mosaics such as the mosaic floor in the Theater an der Wien. For three decades, Wolfgang Hutter worked as a professor at the Vienna University of Applied Arts. In 1977 he received the Prize of the City of Vienna for Visual Arts, 2011 and he was honored with the Golden Medal for Service to the City of Vienna. Let's hope that the death of Wolfgang Hutter is no longer ignored in the public media. Such a large and internationally important Austrian artist and his family should in any case be granted the final tribute in the form of an honoring obituary. Many thanks to Gerhard Habarta without whom the sad news of the death of Wolfgang Hutter and this little obituary would not exist.

The Vienna School of Fantastic Realism

This year's group of international students (mostly from Canada and the U.S.A) have out-done themselves, exploring phantastic and sacred themes in their works while celebrating the Academy's ideals of beauty, craftsmanship and style. Together, these meticulously rendered paintings by Elizabeth Banker, Martin Cash, Kevin Campeau, Dominique Hurley, Rachel Lubeck, Julianna Richey and Hadley Seymore form a stunning example of a new, Idealist art – an exhibition not to be missed, with many of the original works priced for sale. The Opening will include Live Painting and Collaboration by the exhibiting artists. 

For three trimesters, these emerging artists have explored Old Masters drawing and painting techniques through classical academic methods. Guided by an international faculty of well-known Visionary artists, they have explored three distinct traditions: The Humanist Style within the 'Western’ Canon of Classical Greek & Renaissance Art, The Hieratic Style within the ‘Eastern’ Canon of Ancient, Islamic & Hindu-Buddhist Art, and the newly emerging Visionary Style, which carefully combines the best elements of the Humanist & Hieratic traditions. Coming from Australia, America, London, Paris and Vienna, members of the academy's faculty will also be on hand to exhibit their works: Timea Tallian, David Heskin, Aloria Weaver, Daniel Mirante, Kuba Ambrose, Vera Atlantia, Amanda Sage, and Laurence Caruana. The result is a masterful collection of paintings where each work manifests the artist’s unique vision while also pursuing the Academy’s ideal of “AD SACRUM” ~ Toward the Sacred.

Located in the Palais Palffy - home of The Phantasten Museum, Viva Art Gallery, and Professor Ernst Fuchs Studio - The Vienna Academy of Visionary Art opened its doors in September 2013. With English as its primary language of instruction, this international private school was founded by The Visionary Guild, a circle of recognized Visionary artists who had learned the “Mischtechnik” (an egg tempera and oil glazing technique) with Professor Ernst Fuchs - and who are now transmitting their knowledge of this special technique to a new generation of talented artists. The Academy offers a Three-year Programme, as well as Single Trimester studies, week-long Intensives and bi-weekly Life Drawing classes open to the public. Their classical curriculum focuses primarily on Historical Techniques of Painting and Approaches to the Figure, Colour and Composition within both Eastern and Western cultural traditions. By learning the sacred styles of different cultures, the students are able to create original compositions based on their own ideas, visions, and designs. 

As Guest Lecturers, local Viennese artists such as De Es, Michael Fuchs, Peter Gric and Otto Rapp have revealed a distinctly Austrian dimension to the students’ European experience of art-making in a cultural capital. Now in its seventh year, the academy's special summer programme in Italy - The Visions in the Mischtechnik Seminar - has further enhanced the students' classical knowledge of art and technique.

After the culmination of this exciting inaugural year, the Vienna Academy of Visionary Art will again open its doors on September 21st with an Opening Party, before classes recommence for the Fall Trimester with instructors Laurence Caruana, Autumn Skye Morrison and Daniel Mirante. With no entrance examinations, the academy is open to all lovers of the newly-emerging trend in world culture called Visionary Art.
